Default Re: Beginning dry practice casting

I used to fly-fish in WY and MT. Since moving to Bakersfield, due to complicated life and health issues I have not touched a rod or reel in many years, but recently have resurrected my interest and previous love. But it's like beginning all over again. And I knew very little of any "proper" or even "right" ways to do things when I did fish.
It's too late this season to buy a license for trout, so I want to practice casting, knot tying (of course). I want to tie a bright piece of yarn on my line so I can watch my pattern and have my wife help with her observation. I assume it will be best to tie on not only a new leader, but also a new tippett for the actual feel of a fully loaded line. That's my question, basically: should I use the tippett for such dry practice?
I'm watching several videos and DVD's and reading to help get me "back in the saddle" again.
Thanks, ahead of time, for not laughing too loud and for your patience.

Thanks, but I've already had my stupid question answered by reading the practice casting experiences of a few others. I'm red faced now. But I need to find out how to find any answers or comments to what you post now. I'm wondering if you receive an email?

I wonder if this is like the indoor/outdoor practice rod with yarn line that Joan Wulffs great casting teaching DVD shows. Is the line yarn? How long is the rod once you put the two pieces together? What's on the end where the fly would go? How long is the line? Did you find it really helpful?

Glad you found a "hobby" after the big "D" experience.

Yes, the same is.There are different types of length.I try 4'.The "line "is rope. The "leader" is yarn. The lenght of rope is around 20' and leader 3'.
At all i use 10-11 feet of "line".
Let me explain.
To load a rod is required corresponding to the weight class (can suppose #4)
So,if 10 feet "line"= #4 like wight-we have a rod with load.
Practice is:
-timing
-stop
-casting with no wrist
-tight loops
-C&R a wife
it's all over TV
And finally: do not fool yourself-rod isn't easy. The mistake shall be punished with entanglement.
Sorry for my google english
Cheers

Default Tying leader to fly line.

The fly line I just loaded onto my reel has a small loop at the end. What knot is recommended for tying a leader to the fly line with loop at the end?

When I learned to fly cast, I wanted to practice during the winters in Wisconsin. There is way to do that. All you need to do is to make a "fly line" that will load a "rod"

In those days, Lee and Joan Wulff had invented the FLY-O, a fly casting teaching device that used yarn as the fly line. The original FLY-O looked to me just like a short spinning rod and so I used the top section of a 2 piece light spinning rod and bought the FLY-O yarn which was ordinary tow yarn from a Hallmark card shop.

Now Echo has "borrowed" this concept and sells the Echo MPR ( Micro Practice Rod).

Rajeff Sports - Airflo Flylines, Echo Rods, lots of fly-fishing advice

You can buy the FLY-O yarn or you an make your own from Macrame cord. The use the top section of a fly rod or spinning rod to do some indoor casting.

Read the article on the "Spey O" in the publication below on how to make your own FLY-O yarn. Then you can practice casting indoors in a hall way, basement or even in your living room.

Make the fly line and use it on a short "rod" so you can cast indoors. Or you can buy the complete system or just the Fly-O yarn here.

Tie a perfection loop at the butt end of the leader and connect it to the end of the fly line with a loop to loop connection.
