Default Fly Line Troubles

Hi everyone.

Im having troubles with my fly lines shooting from rod. when there new they are great but during the day its always the same. The line never shoots through the rod as good as it started it just gets harder to shoot the line through the rod( Even let my fishing buddy try and he cant work it out ). Its a though the lines are sticking(Cortland,Pirates ect). I try cleaning the lines. But never seems to work. Its like right Im off fishing next week. lets by another line just so I can cast and shoot line with ease. Any advice or help would be appreiciated.

Have you closely inspected the rings for wear on the rod you are using...if they are starting to wear they will start to take the smooth surface off your likes creating friction. Just 1 possibility.

Are you sure it's not just your casting that's reducing in power/technique as the day goes on?

Are your lines picking up either algae from the water or grit from the banks, if so wash them before you apply line cleaner and give them a good stretch every now and again. Fly-lines should last for a long time if looked after. Check the line cleaner you are using is not for plastic lines some of the old Mucalin cleaners are not for plastics. Lastly make sure you scrub most of the cleaner off with a cloth as a residue will pick up s*^%t real quick.

hi there mate

noticed this myself from time to time and found that lines like 40+ and scierra xda ( now discontinued ) overcome this slightly , probably due to the fact the coating on the lines were more plastic like rather than a matte feel to them

all be it i have sometimes had this again with the 40+ line i use now and have found also that when retrieving line the line seems to stick to the rod also between the rings near the tip of the rod and would say that it is caused by algie on the water surface or anything else that may be floating on the waters surface as i could also feel it on my fingers on a day at bangour fishery the line would slow down during a shoot and left me to believe it was the above cause as once the rod was left for a while on the bank it became fine again

my opinion would be to buy a more slick type of coated line like most distance casting lines like the 40+

Try this: next time you clean your line, clean the rod rings and the rod blank too

A friend of mine swears by it, and it takes no more than a couple of minutes once you've cleaned the line.

See if it makes a difference for you

Sorry guy's, but your leading yourselves up the urban myths path. You should be able to cast all day without the line sticking(unless your fishing in algal soup) I don't know what's happening, and I can't explain it, but it does not happen to all the guys I fish with ,and I fish with lots of guys in the comps and for pleasure in a season.

maybe something on your hands thats causing it, a lot of suncreams/lotions are bad for flylines, as i believe some midge/insect repelents are I would imagine theres others too.

Hi Guys. Thanks for all your advice. I think I have come to the conclusion that it must be algie. Reason for this is after I caught from one of the lakes that was showing signs of algie bloom and then moved down to me favourite spot. I noticed my line was not shooting as good. I did try cortland line dressing on my line. But this only scratched the surface. But did improve abit. But did turn my sinking line into a floater for a while. I have now cleaned with the two bucket method and detergent also have cleaned rod and rings.. But is there any way of dressing a line without turning a sinking into a floater and still make it slick when shooting/casting. Any one now of a good dressing for this purpose or shall I try Armorall or food industry safe silicone spray.

Thanks Again
Chilax

Try baby wipes to clean a sinking line/rod rings.Or keep a detergent soaked sponge/cloth in a small sealable container, and when it gets sticky give it a wipe.
