Default Double Haul

I started fly fishing in January earlier this year and I have had 2 introductory lessons and lots of practice in the park.

Due to work & family commitments I have only managed about 7 trips to various fisheries, Stocks being my favourite so far.

I find the Internet and this forum in particular, a mind of useful information. After watching a Joan Wullff video on Double Hauling I was itching to give it a try.

I Spent 2 hours practising my casting in the park this evening and I even managed to do a bit of double hauling . It wasn't that pretty but I definitely had some success with the hand mechanics of the cast. I felt like a kid who had taken off his stabilisers for the first time. My technique was all over the place and the wind wasn't helping but I was smiling when I left the park.

Nice one Chris , it has taken me years to get right and has been known fall apart at times -most recently after being broken by the fish of a life time- . well done.

Hi Chris

The double haul co-ordination takes a bit of getting used to. You need to practice in good conditions if possible to make your life easier. Practice first on a flat field and then try it out on the water which is a totally different feel.If your rythm is not spot on have a lesson with a qualified instructor. This usually costs about £30

Get on down with Joan - watch her again and break it down into component parts (as she does)... It will come, honestly.

An article on sexyloops advocated using a side cast whilst learning the basics. I've no idea why but it seems to make it easier.

Me i taught myself the basics just sitting on the sofa or wherever with a pool que handle as a rod. Then when i felt i could grasp the mechanics of it i practiced on grass and have tried to include it in a couple of refresh lessons since

Pantomime is the way forward, dressing up as "Widow Twankey" optional. It's just a thing I like to do, let's not make a big thing out of it.

Mel Kreiger on YouTube has some great videos where he uses pantomime actions, doesn't dress as a lady though. Good never the less.

Nowt wrong with a bit a dressing up at weekends. It's getting the stains out before the Mrs finds them that's the bu$$er.

Hi

Thanks for all the comments and observations re the double haul.

When practicing the Joan Wulff method she says to 'close your eyes and you will feel it and your timing will improve'. This actually works. Thanks Jedi Joan.

Mel Krieger is another inspirational legend who has excellent motivational videos on the subject.

I intend to keep practcing and will take a further specifc lesson for double hauling in the near future.

Off to Stocks tomorrow, hoping the weather will improve so I can take a boat out.

Chris
