Default fly line stalls

Hi,
When delivering the forward cast as the fly line is heading towards it target the line sometimes hits what can only be described as an invisible wall. All of a sudden it will go from flying out horizontally to nose diving toward the water. it happens quite often. What causes this?

Is this not the reaction of line when the line feeding the shoot is suddenly stopped?

You must have stopped the line for this to happen. It's been snaggedin some way. If it was a bad cast the line is dumped in the water in a jumble.

try putting less effort into the forecast, if you have your timing right and the rod loaded on the back cast then it should be sufficient just to point the rod forward and release the line at about 10 o/clock and follow through easker1

I'm wondering whether it is problem with loop size. A wide loop will collapse.

Same thing with a poor stop. It will kill a cast. Sometimes when trying to cast further, a caster will think that reaching a bit more forward will allow a longer cast. But in reaching, there is a gradual slowing rather than an abrupt stop of the rod.

Post a video if you can.

Sounds like you are trying a bit to hard on the forward stroke to me. Try going back to basics, looking for a straight cast at a shorter distance, everything landing in a straight line. Once that works consistantly start to lengthen the cast and see how it goes. Let the rod do the work.

Oh and try to realize when you are tired, take a break. My rod tells me when I'm tired, it does not work properly .

Chris.

Impossible to say from the discription why it is happening unless the cast and conditions where seen.

Common faults occur most commonly. That is why I suggested a poor stop or a wide loop caused most often by a "windshield wiper" cast. These are common reasons the fly line collapses on the delivery.

However, totsy is correct that the exact reason(s) cannot be determined without seeing the casing motion. That is why I suggested a video.
