Default Droppers twisting....

Evening all

Had a casting lesson recently which was great, worked on a few of the basics and spent some time focusing on casting a team of flies. Following some advice on a day out with a forum member I've switched to fluorocarbon and the stiffness has combined with the casting lesson to reduce the tangles I used to get

Bbbuuutttt (you knew it was coming!!) had an issue this week with the droppers twisting themselves tightly around the mainline. Just wondering if this is something that others have expereinced or is it the symptom of an obvious casting problem?

Thanks guys, any thoughts/hints/tips welcomed

Chris

Around the main line?

Or do you mean around the adjacent tippet? - In which case, it happens but when in the water they tend to unfurl

Chris,

Sometimes fishing a poorly tied booby on the cast can cause this, as they can spin during the retrieve.

If it's just a few twists then I wouldn't worry, as it can help prevent wind (sh1te casting) knots from forming.

Sorry that wasn't very clear was it!! After a few casts the dropper twists tightly around the adjacent tippet, hard to explain exactly but ended up looking a bit like this:

Its possible slower line speed will help. I switched from a slower actioned rod to a fast, tip actioned rod recently. I noticed a lot of tangles of this type for a while until I slowed the rod down just a touch.
Heavily dressed/wind resistant flies on the droppers also contribute to this.
Watch out that your droppers are not to long also. Anything over sevenish inches and you will have problems.
The B.S. of your nylon in relation to the fly can contribute as well.
A size 10 palmered fly on 2lb nylon aint goint to work.

Good advice there from both Graham's. You'll often get more twists in the earlier part of the day, as your droppers are longer, and therefore more prone to wrapping around the leader main line. As the day goes on and your droppers shorten (and effectively, stiffen) due to changing flies then twisting will reduce. As Maharg says, the correct balance between fly size/type and leader material plays a part too, as does the balance of your outfit. Through the course of an average fishing day as conditions, tactics, set-ups, rods, lines, flies change, we probably, on reflection, have a less than perfectly balanced set-up on our hands more often than we do a perfectly harmonised one. Time, money, laziness etc etc see to that. Bottom line... a few twists are an occupational hazzard... everyone gets them from time to time. Don't worry too much about it.

Hello mate,

Have a look at this link and see what you think.

How to tie a tucked water knot

The last two photos show a way of making the dropper stick out at 90 degrees to the leader. I do it all the time and it definately helps reduce tangles. It does say it's not suitable for fluorocarbon. Don't know why but I've never had a problem with it. Caught loads of fish and never had a knot fail.

Give it a go and see if it helps.

Tight lines,

Nick.
