Default Cobbling up a shooting head for 5/6 weight

Where I am at the moment is very limited for casting for numerous reasons, passers by, trees overhead, limited space behind.

The surface feeding carp here refuse to come in, and my mismatch of tackle left me struggling. I have a 5/6 with 7wf, but by the time I am even getting a bend in an already overlined rod I am worried I may get too close to people behind. I can't really jump up a weight in rods as my heavier rods are 10ft, so hello trees!

I have on a spare reel a 9wf. Line is a bin end, so no great loss. I would chop down the front taper of the 7th, but it's my first line, a Sparton so there is sentimental value

If I were to hack say 1/3 rd of the body of the 9wf, would this do me any better than a standard 7wt on a cheap oddy 5/6??

I have some dt lines that would suit roll casting on a 7/8, but I would like to workaround before I got there. I kicked off fly fishing with just a roll and feel I would be admitting defeat if I couldn't adapt mt gear to suit conditions.

Cheers!

Carpflier - would you say you would be mostly wanting to cast overhead or can you jump-roll/switch cast where you're at?

I just need a quick overhead to about 15m at a guess.

Behind me is only about 7-8m, I am struggling to make the difference if that makes sense.

Advice would be to get a lesson you should be able to roll cast that distance with a haul

The problem with very short shooting-heads is that they turn-over really quickly and presentation suffers badly (flying spaghetti!). This can be combated by ensuring a hard stop to the shoot by making sure each cast hits the reel (or you check it by hand), however it won't be pretty. So yes you could make a S/H from the #9 for use on a 5/6 but you may be asking for trouble.

Personally I think I'd be looking to jump-roll the #7 - 15m should be achievable with just a couple of metres clearance behind (assuming the bank is pretty clear so it doesn't snag your D loop).

Agreed..........a jump or snake roll is the way to go. You can get a lot of line out if you know what you are doing. For me jump roll ok snake roll not so ok.........need a bit more practise..............birdsnest

Cheers for the steer....

As it happens I didn't cut anything. The line I thought was wf9 was in fact wf8, so I just tried it, did just what I wanted......

....Probably not very gracefully, but it was an improvement over the 7 weight line.

Lessons were a bit tricky to get in this instance, it was a campsite in France!
