You need to drift the rod back a little on the back haul. This will unload the rod so that you can reapply the power in a more controlled fashion and avoid the tailing loop. I'm sure that one of the instructors on here will explain it better................birdsnest

Try side casting so you can see the effects of, and timing of the haul. Don't make big hauls, start hauling say 6 inches make sure the line remains tight and the haul continues for the duration of the stroke. Tailing has many causes usually moving the rod hand faster when you haul or hauling ( and finishing the haul) to early in the stroke. Best bet really is to see an instructor, self analysis by side casting will help I'm sure but having someone else observe your cast will help even more

Yup............I really don't like the term hauling. For me the cast is a double tug cast. Hauling suggests a steady pull, when really it is a bit swifter than that....................birdsnest

Rubahook,

I suggest investing in an hour or two of quality instruction. Your catching the fly line is, I'm sure, a simple problem to solve. Mostly timing. But you will get it resolved straight away with an instructor watching you and helping you, rather than reading and self medicating

Dave.

i would strongly recommend a lesson with a qualified instructor.

Try the AAPGAI website which will give you a list of instructors in your area.

Kind Regards

Instructor Search | The Game Angling Instructors' Association

This will help, if I could offer any more advice then it would be slow and smooth for the hauling and casting stroke
