Gaz,

Sounds like you've got a tailing loop issue. Best advice is to get yourself to a casting instructor - they'll be able to pinpoint the cause pretty quickly. Could be that you're creeping - unintentionally narrowing your casting arc, or have problems with your power application, there are other causes though.

Have a look here: http://www.sexyloops.com/flycasting/tailingloops.shtml

It can be caused by a number of issues....tracking being one of them normally...but it could well be that your back cast is not straightening out before your forward cast, try this
Start with the rod tip down on the ground....v.important, lift progessively dont snatch, and with your bottom hand PUSH OUT as you lift into the stroke....now turn and look at the line as it goes back, is there a dip in the line or is it straight without any crinkles? if and when it is, commence the forward stoke and stop the rod tip high before drifting the tip down ward
If you still have the same problem let me know!

I reckon you are trying to hard. Let the rod do the work and don't overpower the cast. Stop the rod upright on the back cast to throw a nice crisp loop and avoid a tailing loop (line hitting, or nearly hitting, the ground behind you) give the line chance to straighten out behind and then forward cast without giving it a load of welly. The line will zip out. Many people when learning get a good cast going then as they shoot the line BANG on the forward cast, putting shake in the rod and overpowering it. A "wind" knot is formed. Time for a new leader..................birdsnest

Gaz, there are quite a few causes of tailing loops, so a question like this on a forum will generate a lot of different answers. probably best to have someone who knows what they are looking for take a look at your casting.

Cheers

Frank
