Default River casting?

i was wondering if anyone can give me advice on casting on river, when there are trees in the way making a back cast very difficult? i usually do a bit of loch fishing, so not being able to back cast seems odd to me?

any help would be great

many thanks

Hi albafisher, there are several option for avoiding trees, the first is to cast with the rod out to the side almost parallel to the water, or you could use either a roll cast or a switch cast ( Jump Roll).
if you do a search on you tube you should find some videos of the casts being performed ( although not always well).

Failing that a couple of hours with and instructor will sort you out.

Once you get to grips with the roll cast you will devise all sorts of useful casts that don't conform exactly to those in text books. All small stream fishermen do. You may well find that overlining (using a line one or even two weights heavier) your rod for these very short casts is helpful.

Try to find a river fly angler who would be happy to have a day or two with you on a river or stream! Then forget any text book casting, you'll see quite a number of tricks that a river angler uses to present the fly on the water! You'll also develop a few of your own as you go along and learn more about rivers and streams. Don't worry about it, because it all falls in to place very quickly.

I once fished with a old Norwegian guy, i couldn't understand a word he was saying but his casting did speak volumes.. The way he manipulated his fy line to get into tight places was amazing. The limited time that i have on a river each year makes me always wanting more, just for the sake of learning.. If i will ever fully understand it, i doubt it, and maybe it is better that way..

The roll cast and all the variations based on it, makes it one of the most effective get out of jail cast, absolutely a must for a river fisherman..

Yes once you learn to cast you can manipulate the cast to suit.
But we must start somewhere and imo bog standard casts are the way to go then you would basterdise them for any given situation, Of which Malcolm is probably one of the best
