Default What am I doing wrong ? advice please

I'm quite new to fly fishing and I've caught a few trees since the begining , but I've only just realised that I'm catching the trees ( behind me ) about 20/25 feet above my head ( I'm 5 11 and my rod is 8 6 ).

Is this normal for a beginner or am I doing something wrong ?

any advice would be greatly received

Dave

Obviously, your back cast should be at an upward angle, if all's clear behind then an angle of 10 to 15 degrees or so would be about right. As your back cast unfurls then the top of your loop will be higher than the lower leg of your loop and the wider your loop then the higher your fly will be.

My question is, how far behind you are the trees? Perhaps you're in a situation where the overhead cast isn't the right choice and developing your ability to perform the roll cast / spey cast or some variation of them is the way to go.

Go fishing with a chainsaw....
No seriously, if you aim at soething, chances are you are going to hit it. Next time, turn your head and have a look at what is going on behind you on the back cast. Very often it only takes a few steps to the left or the right, and you will be able to send your back cast into a space between trees.

I have been reading Lefty Kreh on casting. One of the things he says is that if you end your backcast by a slight jab of the rod in the direction you want the line to go that is where it will go. I have been practicing at home trying to get the backcast through an open door - it works.

Having a slight problem with arthritis I am particularily interest by the Kreh way of casting which makes great use of the body, and tries to minimise effort and strain, especially on the shoulder.

However, such casting would not be approved of by most casting instructors!

Gordon,

The Lefty way of casting is done to minimise shoulder damage, or you could use a side cast, anything to minimise shoulder issues, I have taught plenty of people and a few with shoulder issues, I always state that you must do whatever is comfortable for you. Grip the rod in your mouth and cast through you legs if it works.

A good instructor should be able to adapt to the students needs
