Default Double Haul.

hi had my thinking head on today.lol.
I was casting a weight forward snowbee xs. in a 7 . on a 9` 6" Rod Thompson, middle to tip actioned rod.
My problem was a hedge some distance behind me.
If I put the running line just inside the tip ring I found that I could shoot some line.(but not as much as I would have liked)
here lies the problem .If I then did a false cast I ended up in the hedge.,

My thoughts were is it ok to put a double haul in (without giving line) so as to increase line speed and get a bit more distance.
thus keeping away from the hedge.
I hope this makes sense.

It's ok to haul without giving line but it may be easier moving away from the hedge

Like Brian said, i almost always do a small haul... I would take a chainsaw for the hedge but like CU pointed out earlier i'm a bit of an odd ball..

Yes it might help to increase line speed, but line speed might not, in itself, keep the line off the hedge. Remember that, if you are aiming at the hedge on your back cast, you will hit it, regardless of line speed. Check how far back you are dropping the trod tip, and make the neccessarry adjustment.
Also, you have overlined your rod, so you are inevitably going to have a little loss in energy, causing the line to fall slightly due to gravity.
Extra line speed is not going to help if you are collapsing the rod on the back cast. Sure, you might feel it load a little better with a line weight up, but the down side, is that you are losing energy. It's really not worth overlining, purely to feel the load, when the load cant tranfer enough energy for the line to hold. It's the overlining debate all over again, so lets not go there as we don't want to re awaken the sleeping giant, but I firmly believe that the overlining issue has a lot to do with your problem.
My suggestion, would be to try the correct line weight for the rod, and see if there is any difference.

Just cleaning the tea screen.

I am inclined to agree with Andre, try aiming the cast above the hedge, I think you are probably either hitting the back cast slightly down or waiting to long to start the forward cast, that is presuming it is just a normal size hedge in the 5ft range? And If I could be so bold as to suggest getting a casting lesson.

But to actually answer you question yes you can haul without shooting line.

Ideal place to practice your hauled switch cast. The chances are you will cast much further as that is clearly your objective.

I can't see why DD has over lined, unless Ron T doesn't do a 9'6" in #7???

Edit:

Ahhhh, I see... It was hypothetical

We did discuss ' overlining ' at some length......... and already it seems that some have forgotton the findings .

Some rods load better when overlined....... sadly, imo a Ron Thompson doesn't. A line such as the xs imo, will be an out and out nightmare to cast on a RT. My advice would be to keep the line, maybe try it on a rod with a little more backbone and see how you get on.

A think a steeple type cast to clear the hedge may cause you problems, especially with the outfit your using.

I wouldn't double haul in your circumstance...... keep to the single haul on the forward cast.
