Default Shooting heads as a learning aid

As above, are there any pros/cons to using a shooting head as a guide. To loop shapes, hauling, just general line & rod control. You know. Can using a shooting head, give a clearer picture of faults in hauling, loading etc etc.

Or is one; better off just sticking to WF/DT lines, my usual equipment.

Personal opinion here only Sean, but when I 'teach' someone to cast I'll always start them out with a double taper. Once they have a reasonable skill level that's when I'll reline the rod with a WF.

Personal observation here only but it appears (to me) that it's easier to develop 'good casting habits' with a DT than a WF "in the beginning." How far you can cast can come later.

Shooting heads can be a very effective tool to learn hauling with. I find that you can "feel" what's going on a bit better and the running line flies up the rod making it easier to follow with the hauling hand. Don't get more than a yard or two of the head off the rod though or it will hinge and spoil the cast.............birdsnest
