Clearly my minds eye needs bifocals
I thought (clearly wrongly) that the purpose of 'the give' was to accelerate line speed slightly before the forward cast to ensure maximum loading???

DN, basically the unload is part of the sequence that allows loop formation, we stop the rod then the rod begins to unload, as it completes its unload the line begins to travel faster than the rod tip. At this point the line passes over the rod tip an the loop is formed. The loop then unfurls until straight when next casting stroke begins, thus beginning to reload the rod.
You can't reload a rod that is loaded you can only increase the load.
Regarding giving back line it when I think about it it serves two purposes, I to maintain the amount of line being used to load the rod between front and back casts. The other purpose is to bring the hands back together for the next haul.
