Default the 5 essentials of fly casting

The attached videos, might help to answer quite a few casting questions that have come up oin the forum.
I like the way that this guy explains stuff, but also find the voice a little boring...enjoy.
For anyone struggling with their casting, I t would be agood idea to download the clips and watch them often.

Essential 1. elliminating slack
Assential 2. Timing
Essential 3. Vary the casting arc
Essential 4. Power application
Essential 5. Straight line path of the rod tip

yes, that one is further on in the DVD. Have you had a look at the bucket cast, tuck and wiggle casts?... very good stuff.
I was lucky enough to buy the complete series, only to find that it is all on Youtube... anyway, it's my favorite instructional casting DVD at the moment.

Just the 'stuff' the fellow has on U-Tube. But the interesting thing is the casts you've mentioned above actually work quite well with a 2-hander 'switch rod.' Took more than a bit of practice to get it down 'right,' but works very well.

yes, he actually mentions this in the introduction to the DVD, saying that they are possible and effective with single and double handed rods. I personally cant really see the difference between single and double handers in effectiveness, so yes, I would have to agree.
I particularly enjoyed the "aerial mend" section, where he puts a curve in the fly line, for casting over a faster or slower flowing section..... very usefull .

Is there a U-tube link to the intro? Would love to hear what he has to say. As for the aerial mend do that all the time. The largest percentage of 2-hander fluff chuckers here in the PNW will do a down and across cast when they're fishing. Some of 'us' do a slightly up and across as we want the first bit of the drift to be a 'dead nymph' type of presentation.

The way we make that work is via a up stream aerial mend as the line is going out. This puts the leader pointed down stream (fly first) and the last few feet of the line will be curved down stream. Just after the line hits the water a second up stream mend is usually needed to keep the fly/leader/line orientation in a dead drift mode.

nicely put, you must be in the minority over there on that one, why do they fish down and across in the US?

Ohanzee, to be perfectly honest I don't have a clue, save for this is what 'they' were taught or saw on u-tube vid's as the way to 'swing flies.' The idea of skipping 30 to 45 degrees of the water your trying to fish with each cast escapes me.

With 'my casts' I'm dead nymphomania (bad pun intended) the first 45'ish degrees and then the rest is the normal 'swing' as the line/leader straightens out.

But what the heck do I know?
