Default Spey Casting Problems! Help Needed!

Well this year after around 15 years i decided to get myself back on ther ivers fishing for salmon and sea trout.

I bought myself a second hand shakespeare Golden Fly 15ft 9/11 Salmon rod. I Have Spey cast in the past and managed fine with the other rods i have tried but for some reason i simply cant get this the line to load the rod.

The Line is a WF10 and it was already on the reel i bought. I have tried a long line spey cast and short line casts. Ive tried a slow spaey cast and speeding it but but still the line wont shoot and just lands on the water like spagetti.

Any Advice would be a great help. Is it me Or is it the line or what?? I dont think its me as i have tried spey casting on all my other rods where i havent been able to back cast and its spot on..

Kinda driving me mad now

Thanks

Andy

Start off by cleaning the line and the rod rings: fill a bucket or washing-up bowl with a small amount of mild clothes-washing detergent in warm water. Strip the line from your reel into the container and leave it, and a soft cloth, to soak for half-an-hour / a week. Run the line through the soft cloth and repeat until the line does not leave a dirty mark on the soft cloth. Leave the line to dry on the carpet / across a table / across a settee ... it's clean so you need to put it somewhere clean. It will be dry in no time and you can wind it back onto the reel.
Use the soft, damp cloth to clean the rod rings *and the rod blank*. Leave the rod to dry before putting it away.

Next time you go out to fish or cast does this make any improvement? If not then book a casting lesson; otherwise book a casting lesson

Hi Andy, you're saying it's a WF10. Is that perhaps a WF10 for say piking on the fly, or is it a true spey line?

Law Guy, that was my first question too. If the rod was used for 'over-hand' casting a 10wt single hander AFTMA line might work, not a chance with a 'spey cast.'

Fred, I couldn't agree more, the taper and bellies are different for longer rods even though it's the same weight rating. I recently seen a friend try this out with a 9wt w/f line on a 13' double hander and like a wooden car with with a wooden engine, it wooden work lol.

Hi fellas.

well i little development. My dad atcually purchased the reel for me from a guy he knows. So as he was meeting him tonight he thought he would ask about the line. It turns out he made a mistake and put a WF7 trout line on the salmon reel instead of the Salmon line. So thats why the line isnt shooting.

Now its time for me to buy a Spey line.

Kinda cant believe i didnt check it but when someone says its 10 and what he had been using for the rod you just believe them..

Think from now on ill just check.

I was getting so down and Angry about it all too. As i know i can spey cast but just couldnt figure out what was wrong.

Lesson Learnt

We've all had moments like that.

I once noticed after a whole days salmon fishing, with the spey line flying out effortlessly, that I had the tip section from another rod on.

Not just that, but one rod was a 15' Daiwa Wilderness #11 which is like a telegraph pole, and the other rod was the 13' Greys GRXi which is like a whippy fairy wand.

I never noticed the difference in my casting, if anything I enjoyed the whole day with effortless casting.

What line are you thinking of purchasing for your salmon fishing then Andy?
