Default Why?

I hold and cast my rod in my right hand and retrieve my line with my left which seems to be a normal procedure to me. I have friends that cast with their right hand as well but they transfer the rod to their left hand and then retrieve the line with their right hand. They can't explain as to why they make this extra move?

Do you do this as well and if so, why?

Different strokes for different folks, that's all. It's like LH/RH wind reeling in relation to your casting hand. Although there are no shortage of experts who'll tell you that you absolutely must do it a certain way. Whatever rings your bell, is as far as my opinion goes.

Default left or right

Yes it annoys me for some reason as well ,then you get the ones that put their hand on the rim of the reel to slow the fish down when most have a drag that stops a train nowadays, boat rods with multipliers for marlin etc most are right hand wind so you have people who are right handed fighting large fish with their weakest arm and winding with the strong one, wouldnt do it specially for that reason it doesnt feel the same for me,but as the previous guy says everyone to their own

I have an old friend who is left handed, but has always used fixed spool reels with standard left hand wind. He casts with the rod in his left hand and switches to the other hand to retrieve.

I fish with both, not really bothered, 6 of one and half a dozen of the other.

'Lefty' Kreh wrote about this in one of his SWFF books; he reckoned most people can wind faster with their right hand... he thought it worthy of mention.

I reckon people wind the fastest with the hand they do the most practice with.

Very true. The reason I prefer fighting/playing the fish with my right hand/arm is because the feel and sensitivity of the rod is that much greater and enjoyable.

All well and good; but what about double handed use?

Sir, I hardly know you. So because of that, I feel very uncomfortable answering that question.
