Default casting problem

Hi I've just started fly fishing today and went on a small river here in Norwich, to try and get my casting right, came home after blanking, but feel i'm having trouble getting the distance in my casting, i use a 5/6 weight 9ft rod with 6 weight, weight forward line i did have quite a strong wind coming from the right but about the best distance i could get was about 40ft is that very poor for a beginner and do you think this will improve on it's own or do you think a casting lesson would put this right, any advice would be appreciated please thanks Rod

Best advice is get a casting lesson from a properly qualified instructor, money well spent .

+1

but 40ft is not bad for a complete beginner. How many flies did you lose?

If you are managing 40 ft and right handed with the wind from the right then that is excellent. As a beginner however you have the opportunity now to not pick up bad habits that will be much harder to correct years from now so having a good instructor for some lessons now would be money well spent.

I completely agree with you

You can have the perfect fly, tied with excellent materials but if you do not present it in the right place and in the best possible way, it serves no purpose! Massimo Magliocco
