Default Problems with wind

No, I don't live in Malawi and its probably a good job I don't!

It seems to me that we tend to get a lot more windy days now than 30 odd years ago when I was a lad. Have any of you noticed that? I struggle to cast into the wind; I use a #5 DT floating line. Its better if I have a weighted nymph on point but a dry fly will just hang in the wind and drop down in a heap of leader.

I have read about "punching the fly out into the wind". If I try to punch it out hard I get tailing loops and the inevitable follows. Is there any particular quick and easy adjustment I should make to the cast to get it into the wind, or does it take a lifetime of practice?

Also, does anyone know if there are any casting clubs in the Leeds/Bradford/Harrogate area?

i think you will get some good advice from other forum members but i often fish when the wind blows across the river and is private on other bank even in summer, i find a silk line d/t 5 can do better than a plastic line, lets see how others do

The easiest and simplest fix is to stop the rod lower when casting into the wind, upping the line as suggested will not help. Another thing is to try casting on the side this in effect cuts under the wind

Good luck
Chris

Go see Carl Hutchinson at Ripon, up the road and one of the best instructors out there, also, in the other direction Jim Currey AAPGAI master and a top bloke to boot.

Stopping the line hard with your line hand or against the reel will help give you a positive turn-over. Also try and minimise the shoot on the forward cast (feed the line on the backcast if you can). Aim your cast lower so the wind has less time to catch it (or side cast as previously mentioned). You also have to accept that you will lose some distance, so don't get frustrated by being overly ambitious!
