Default Dieter Weiler: Single-handed Spey in slo-mo

YouTube - Speycasting in slomotion

Discuss!

Having watched it through a couple of times in HD/fullscreen several things jump out at me:
  • he's a really good caster; unlike another German single-handed Spey devotee there's no *ripping* of the line off the water
  • he's using a real "wand" of a light, stiff rod - who says bendy rods are better for Speys
  • Dieter gives the perfect example of "go and kiss" (rather than "kiss and go"): he anticipates his anchor and is already "go"ing at the point the anchor is achieved
  • my only criticism would be that he drops his rod tip much too soon ... as if he cares what I think

Andrew

Andrew,

I agree with you about the dropping the rod, he is opening his loops a little after his delivery, as for the go and kiss, did you spot the skipped anchor?

Chris

There is one glaring fault, can you spot it?
Its not his choice of footwear.

Andrew, he drops the rod tip in time with the leader unrolling, its just late with a low tradjectory, in one of the later casts he stops earlier but with the same low tradjectory,

he could aim higher and let the line straighten before dropping.

He is dropping the rod tip whilst the fly line is unrolling, you can see the loop opening as he lowers the rod tip, useful when fishing a team of flies but for demo purposes I would hold the stop.

he is, but an earlier or higher stop is not enough on its own without the correct tradjectory for the cast, a spey cast is no different from an overhead cast in this respect,

if he stopped earlier in the first cast it would shorten his casting stroke and half the power he is using, resulting in a tailing loop or the line would collapse.

If after his stop he keeps his rod still then the cast is complete, he then pauses and allows the line to unroll to the target. There is no shortening of the casting cycle, there is no earlier stop, everything is in place for him to hold his rod after his stop and he will not open up his loops the way he does on some of the casts. No need to change a single thing apart from holding the finish.
