Default AFTMA Standards - ??

Hi All, I may be posting this on the wrong forum point, so this may get re-directed, though it affect casting so here goes.

Over the last week or so Iv'e been trying to get my head around the weighting system used for fly lines.

Iv'e re-read the Common Cents system and some of it makes sense.

Having one standard, where all manufacturers are supposed to comply with line limits and weighting, makes sense. The AFTMA standard of 1961.

Some people say Snowbee are more or less spot on, with their line ratings to suit all rods. Both you and I know that if you put two lines together of the same rating, but from different manufacturers, they would both load differently.

How do manufacturers get around the line or head weighting system? From what I understand of all this, the weight is meant to be the first 30ft of fly line excluding the tip section.

Any info would be great.

Best Regards

Stuart

Hi Dont Know if you have read this, Paul Ardens Sexylops web site
AFTM Table

Aftma & Aftm are a very old system, as you say it alters from one line to another, when really you would think it would be the same, but life isn't that simple

And then, for a little more fun you can try to relate all this weight business to spey rods

it would be useful if manufacturers put 2 ratings on a line. 1 based on the weight of the first 10 yards as at present and one based on the weight of the coplete head so a line with a 20yd head may have a rating of 7# for the first 10 yds and eg 9# for the whole 20yds if you aerialise the whole head

would it be useful if manufacturers put the actual weight on the box?

the weight difference is not great and and the rod is manufactured to cope with the range.

the question was how do they get round it, they dont, they manufacture within the range, some upper, some lower,

different profiles, weight distributions and head lengths at the same aftm feel different too.

Nick/shortea, RIO have all the information you might need on their website: diagrams of the line profile, 30 foot weight, total head weight. Example http://www.rioproducts.com/product.php?fmCategory=4
If you want to know this sort of detailed data about your line, buy a RIO! (I do)
The only ouch can be the price, but they're no more expensive than the other big brands.

if you need, you can get a set of digital scales for about 6 quid in most supermarkets,

ideally you need to establish the weight that your after though, a precise measurement is pretty useless if you dont know what it means.
