Default Backing questions

A couple of questions for distance casters.

1. What backing do you recommend?

2. Joining backing to line. I was talking to another forum member about this yesterday. What I normally do is strip the plastic from the core then whip the join and cover with several very thin coats of aquasure - which is quite a long process and doesn't always work well. I wondered if there is a better and easier coating to use.

Depends on what i'm looking to achieve,If it's an individual shooting head, without need for changing heads I use 3' of' Braid.with the flyline and airflo polyshoot butting up against each other in the middle with a good blind whip finnish at the Ends of the braid.works a treat.
If I'm going to be changing heads I use a braided loop on the head, and tie the polyshoot with a big loop.

Hi Malcolm,

For general fishing that involves a lot of shooting of line, I use 3M or Teeny salwater shooting line. Basically that is a monofilament core with a fly line dressing on the top. It is much stiffer than regular shooting line. It tangles less once stretched.

Normally if I want to make up a line that does not involve changing the casting head, I slip the fly line core up inside the shooting line for around 20mm and super glue it. A tiny low profile whip done with a bobbin holder pun round to lay the thread tightly stops the very end of the braid fraying. I usually finish that whip with some slow drying epoxy rubbed in to seal it.

Hello David,
as I understand it you thread the fly line core through the shooting line? I suppose this is with a braided core shooting line or do you use this technique with a nylon core shooting line as well? Any chance of a (small) SBS cause this is mighty interesting?

Hello Jim,
I tried your system as well but had a break off on the joint which cost me a 40£ head. What i did though was superglue the braid before whipping it and i guess that is what caused the breakage

Hello Malcolm,
Did you mean backing to fly line or as David and Jim understood head to shooting line?

Kind regards,
Johan

SBS? I'm not familiar with that term.

You can use a needle to open the hole through the core of the backing, and then strip the flyline coating by dipping it in some cellulose thinners till it softens. Leave around 15-20mm sticking out from the line coating. Then smear some superglue over the braid. Let it harden till it is nice and stiff. (or use a cyno cure spray to speed drying up) Trim to a point, then another dab of glue on it, then push it into the backing. A small 5mm whip and the job is done. I have never had that joint fail in use in fresh or saltwater.

You can use the same technigue to form a loop in the shooting line if you want to use heads. I prefer to keep different lines that are permanenty bonded to the backing on seperate spools. The junction is much lower profile than a loop to loop joint and slips through the rod guides more smoothly.

Like just said
Use braid put the fly line inside the braid for about 1 1/2 inches and put a whipping on the back of the braid then superglue.
It will not come off just check it ever couple of trips. That was the method used with a full DT line for distance casting events.
