Default Rod facing direction while casting?

Probably a strange question but I was out practising casting on my aunts lawn and was talking to her neighbour and he had a casting with my rod and got further than me although to me all the casting technique and tips I've tried to learn he didn't do, he cast from his wrist and this the strange bit he rotated while cast so that when he was letting his backcast extend the reel was point towards the line.

Now I'm wondering If he knows something about I haven't picked up ina year and a half or if he just had better timing?

What do you think?

AL

Hi Al,

It's a bit hard to visualise given the description of the reel pointing at the line - could you say what the rod was doing? However, from my impression of your description it could be that he was employing a lot of drift - i.e. following the line backwards with the rod after the stop is made on the back cast. This is a good thing if you want to cast far. Also, there's nowt wrong with a bit of wrist! Especially if done correctly.

James.

James he turned the rod round 180 during the cast.

The rings started pointing forward, by the time he stopped for his backcast the rings were pointing behind him and then on the forward they came back round again.

Hope this is simpler
AL

Sounds like a Galway cast then.

sounds like he rotates the rod using just wrist power, many people do, for short casts its quite easy, not great for progressing beyond though.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it a good tactic in order to stop the fly catching the rod on the back cast, as it sort of throws the fly outwards as the wrist rotates?

i was thinking just wristy casting, i think your talking tracking, cant beat a bit of sideways stuff but wrist control is an art, back and forth on the same plane without twisty stuff, line over the rod tip back and forth or your loops will be less than parallel, unless you need that of course.
