Default Line hitting rod

I tried a new rod out today, just practising in my mum's garden. The rod was a Diawa Lochmor 9.5' #6. There was a bit of a backwind, and I had some trees behind me which I was wary of catching. Thing were generally okay, but for some reason, the line must have hit the rod about ten times (no hook), both on the front cast and the back.
I also had a Greys 10ft #8, which I was practising with as well, and it never happened once.
Anyone know what is likely to have caused this - or what generally causes the line to hit the rod?

I'm wondering if it's because I was trying to keep the backcast up a bit to avoid the trees, or whether it's something to do with the different actions of the rods (though I must admit I haven't a clue what the actions of either rod are).

Was the wind coming slightly from the side as well as behind? It might be the wind was enough to push the lighter line onto the rod, but not enough to push the #8.

Thanks for that. I'll check out the link.

Yes, the wind was a little from the side as well.

I'll read up, anyway, just to see.
