Default Boat Fishing-How To Get Started ?

Ive been out in a boat twice now and enjoyed myself on both occassions but i have had the boat motored around for me and i would like to learn how to do it myself so i can go out either by myself or another of my mates. I know about general rules and saftey stuff such as keeping a distance from drifting boats but dont have a clue how to motor about or that Any help would be great. Tight Lines, Nathan.

Some reservoirs do a boat handling course that may well save you from any mishaps whilst out on the water, failing that, get someone who knows how to handle a boat out with you as supervision. If you are at all unsure how to operate the motor, ask for advice from the fishery staff.
When out on the water, it's important to know where you want to fish especially if fishing from a drifting boat. Never motor up the drift or area that you want to fish, always try to give it a wide berth. Cut the engine rev's as you start to approach your selected area so that you create as little disturbance as possible. Always make sure the boat is stopped before fishing, you may have to select reverse to achieve this. Same rules apply really if you are going to achor although you should not anchor amongst other baots that are drifting.
Also important, is that motor must always give way to 'sail', so keep an eye out for anything thats likely to come across the front of you whilst motoring. Always make sure that you have a clear view in front of the boat whilst motoring, it's amazing how easy it can be to run into marker buoys etc. Finally, motor at a speed that you feel comfortable with to start. Hope this is of some help, best of luck and tight lines. Al.O

Default Safety

Wear a lifejacket, the gas ones are good and less bulky, cost around £34.00.
Ask the bailliff about wind, currents, depths and dont be shy in telling him you are new to boat handling.
How long it will take to return to jetty with increasing winds ?
The R Y A do excellent coastal boating courses but mabye more than you need.
If anchoring, allow rope triple the depth you are in.
The list is not endless but long. Most important is your safety, the larger the lake, the larger the waves, currents etc.

Good luck
Ken
