Default Do fish hide underneath the boat?

Well heres something I have been wondering over a number of years especially as I've seen some interesting occurences. We all tend to hang our flies at the end of the cast and this accounts for alot of fish, now theres an arguement there that the fish has followed your flies to the boat and that does happen no doubt. However, I can not be the only one as it's happened twice on my adventures. My boat partner has changed flies and quite literally chucks them in front of the boat only to have them 'taken' straight away, it has also happened to me once. Any other forum members experienced this? Fish do look for structure after all so is it such a stupid thought? Look forward to hearing your views.

I heard of a guy fishing the mountain shore on Killarney's L Lein on Saturday,he had 3 keepers on and after unhooking the bottom fish first threw the fly out of the net to have it taken by another good trout .

i wouldn't be surprised if fish did hang out under boats/float tubes not knowing what was going on above water. Perhaps they see something that emergers could climb onto so they watch it waiting for takers?
Once i was shore fishing at the local trout pond and i had just threaded my line through my guides and through it in the water so it wouldn't tangle in the weeds. i had a dry fly in the jumble of line and i suddenly heard a splash right close to me. A fish must have swam by and somehow saw my dry and tried to take it. scared me good.

I've had quite a few takes in my tube on the flies that are hanging in the water while I'm changing flies. Luckily I have hooked myself yet from the take.

Im sure some fish do hide under boats, well in fact i once caught over 40 trout under a boat on a river bank, but i am unsure whether stillwater trout do the same i cant see why not since most boats have an abundance of weed underneath them. But then on the other hand people say that the fish turn away because they see the boat.

Well with the boat moving trout will be under it for short lengths of time. For years i have fished with a fish finder and never have witnessed trout hanging around under the boat. The only time trout appear on it are in very deep water, they usually avoid the boat, you would see a rise in front of you, see a fish on the side finder but then never on the bottom finder.
But I only ever fish for wild trout so stockies might be different.

Many many years ago at Rutland me and my pals used , very deliberately , on sunny days to fish as close to the shadows of moored yachts as possible . And around 15 ' deep seemed to be the best ! It was ,of course , a technical infringement of the proximity rules of those days !

Got a lot of trout by it too . And when those nasty yachting supervisors came out and shouted at us off the bank - we used to shout back in German 'Forsprung Durch Tecknik' or something similar and get another couple of casts in before they twigged and got real umpty!

They surely like the shade - the trout , that is .

But whereas I've had an odd trout taking droppers whilst I was unhooking a fish taken on the point - not enough to say one way or the other about Float Tubes .

Interesting
