Put fishfinders into the search box and you'll get pages and pages of info.

I use a fishin buddy...works fine for me needs. You should resally think of them as dept/contour finders and not fish finders as I only ever spot decent size fish 25ft down on deep loughs whilst trolling. All the other beeps tend to be silver fish or gas bubbles

I had a fishin buddy also, used it on the tube very successfully . The side beam would show fish if they were near the surface , the main use , as mentioned , is to find contours and features .
I now have a Smartcast for use from the bank, you cast the transducer out and read out from the base station . AVOID these unless you like model making - the transducer's batterys do not seem to last as long as they should and you have to cut it open to replace it or buy another !! They work best dissected and fitted to a bait boat . I have also extended the aerial to increase the range .

Everything depends on how much you want to spend and how you're going to use it. Do you own your own boat or use rentals? What price range?

On my boats I have a Lowrance and an Eagle. Humminbird and Garmin also produce good units.

As far as value for money, an Eagle Cuda series is difficult to beat. I bought an Eagle Cuda 2 years ago and for $79, the performance is excellent.

Select one with with a narrow beam. This reduces the amount of spurious reflections.

I've used the Garmin 160 for a few years (before there was a colour version!) and it's excellent.

It's worthwhile investing in a Gel Cell rechargeable battery - they're available at Maplins.
