Default Bilge pump fitting

I am just about to add a bilge pump to my Sheelin ,I would like to put the outlet over the side of the gunnel rather than through the hull ,what have you guys done with your bilge pump hose ?

Hi Colin,

I'm in the process of putting one into my new boat. I'm putting it out through the hull though.

All you need to do is run the tube on the underside of the gunwhale and then out over the transom in the corner where the top of the gunwhale meets the transom. Thats the neatest I've seen them when they haven't gone through the hull.

Barry

Just put a hole and a plug in your boat and when you are moving this will take the water out
its to much hassle having a bilge pump

The more water in the boat...the fresher the fish will be for the weigh in

Thats why we wear waders in the boat now...

As OD says...screw the bung out when motoring...maybe not the safest method but certianly one of the quickest

Are you not concerned the pump will be another snag for your fly line?

Och no ,i have a wee hook to hang it up on under my seat well out of harms way ,i like the sound of the dibblers idea as i see there is a wee gap between the knee and the transom .And as for keeping the fish fresh i'll need to catch them first

The boat on Melvin has the pipe over the side and its a pain in the ass, for such a little thing it's constantly in the way.

I installed the other one through the hull but well up at the gunwhales and kept the battery under the seat, in a wee box. Class job.

If you still didn't want to go through the hull you could keep it portable, take it out, use it, then put it away. But this way wouldn't be much addition if you had to bail and drive at the same time

Not so much when your only on Sheelin Danny, but on the bigger lakes when you have to drive in rough weather with spray/water comming over the side and possibly rain as well, the water runs to the front of the boat pushing you into the wave. Its alot of weight to be running the length of the boat.

Saves pissing about with a champion milk carton at least you can get rid of the water while keeping an eye on whats going on. One less thing to worry about.

Agree with the above, I like the convenience of being able to come to the boat the morning after a rain and just flip the switch and let the bilge pump do the work rather than faffing about trying to bail.

Also very handy when things get rough out there and should you take green water over the bow. Hit the switch and keep your hand on the tiller. For this reason alone, I think it's good to fit the biggest GPH-rated pump that's feasible.

I've always installed the through-hull fittings because I think it looks neater and once I put one in, I don't intend to take it out.

BTW, just a word of caution, if you have a bilge pump, make sure there's no water left in your bilge in the winter. If there's water in the bilge and it freezes, it'll bust the pump all to hell. Don't ask me how I know that. What a damn mess and it takes about an hour spent standing on my head to remove and install a new pump in my small boat, so don't let that happen to you.
