Default Yamaha or Suzuki

I'm intending to buy a new 6hp 4 stroke outboard from either Yamaha or Suzuki. Does anyone have any views on which is the better bet. The Suzuki is a bit cheaper but Yamaha's seem more popular locally. It's to power a lake boat on the Corrib and the size/weight is restricted by the need to lift it on and off the boat every time I go out. If I left it on the boat some b**tard would steal it.

ok, well its horses for courses i guess paul, personally i use suzuki , ive got 3 of them up to 15hp, i find them reliable , strong and well finished, ,i wont lie and say they are feather weight, they are not, but i believe they are slightly lighter than the yamaha, ,
could you squeeze up to a 9hp engine paul, corrib is a great lake but can get very contrary, thats where the extra hp comes into its own , getting you home safely,
choice is yours mate ,

Some great deals on Mariner/ Mercury 4 strokes at the minute, if you prepared to pay in sterling and travel up north to get it.

You might save a packet

I recently bought a 15hp 4 stroke Mercury for a very good price ,i paid less for a brand new engine than what some places are selling second hand engines for

Hi Paul
I understand your desires, but if you want a light weight engine you need to leave out the words 4-stroke!

A 2-stroke 9.9 weighs 31 kgs but 4 str 9.9 weighs 42kgs or a third heavier.
So if weight is paramount, get a used 2-stroke instead. You can use it as long as it lasts on the Irish lakes and that would be 25 years if you look after it.

On the other hand, if fuel economy is paramount, then a 4-str has advantages in this area - to keep the weight down, you have to accept either a smaller size 4-stroke, or accept that it will be a much heavier engine to lift and carry.

If it is to be new, then you have no choice, since all new engines on most lakes are required to be 4-strokes, so this may be the deciding factor.

But when lifting and carrying across a field to a boat is involved, I suggest you actually need a 3-4 year old 2-str outboard.
Suggestion: Talk with a dealer and request that they keep an eye out for a clean example and call you between now and next spring.

Smile Yamaha/Suzuki

Hi,

I am making similar enquiries and have been informed by a dealer that a brand new Yamaha 4 stroke 6HP is coming to the market (F6 CMHS) and that it is designed to be much lighter than others its class at 27kg. The dealer says it has just been released and he expects delivery in late January 2010. My Google searches (Yamaha F6 CMHS) come back with information in either Dutch or German (the pictures look good!) so I suspect it has not been marketed in the UK/US yet.

John , you got some sound advice about the engines, 2 stroke are like hens teeth at the moment, some great deals on the bigger engines as oakham orange mentioned, your fishing corrib which is a fantastic lake with a massive expanse of water, from experience of fishing the lakes over the years i would not drop under a 9hp paul, to have the extra hp is a burden carrying it onto the boat and back, but its a bonus and life saver when a lake decides to get nasty, and they do as many members will tell you, corrib on a bad day is like hell ,

oakham orange will put you right regarding a new engine paul if you want to contact him

Nothing beats the howl of a Yammy tho! (17k rpm on a bike)

I suppose they are much of a muchness with regards outboards tho; in fact I doubt you'll beat a jap motor for legs
