Default Recommended: Fins and boots for tubing

Hi lads,

I've been in touch with Blue Water sports re fins for tubing.
There are so many styles and shapes of fins out there that its not hard for us to get the wrong ones. Especially if you know nowt on fins

I wanted to knwo why certain ones are cheap and why some cost £100s. So I've done some research

I do have a mate who dives and he found it hard to suggest a pair of fins but did recommend a few.

I rang this shop last week to explain the use and he suggested one of the same

These fins point downward and help us with our seated position. They're very powerful, lightweight, will help us turn in the water and more importantly, as they point down, they wont break the surface as we fin

My tip here, dont use your wading boots, use neoprene booties. Only about £6 and are much more lightweight than the clumsy heavy wading boots we have

Hope this helps someone

John

Those fins or more correctly the design is becoming popular among scuba divers.
I would point out that they are designed for use while swiming in a prone position, and enable the swimmer to not have to "point his toes" in order to achieve the ideal of the fin being positioned inline with the direction of travel.

But that's not how we float tubing people are positioned. We are sitting, and because of this, our toes are already inline with the direction of movement.
So a straight fin design will always be more efficient for float tubing.

The split fin may or may not be advantageous, but I would not advise anyone to get tilted or angled fins for tubing.

Hope you agree with the neoprene bootie suggestion though

Oh yeah ... booties are simply the best I've found to make a stockingfoot into a boot for walking ... beats brogues anyday. A smaller bootie is also very good for making a summer breathable wader clad foot fit into a spring-autumn neoprene clad sized fin.

Let us know how you get on with the fins, would you?

I use a pair of beach shoes with neoprene soles that came from ebay. They protect my waders and are much lighter than wading boots. The weight from wading boots makes them a pain in the butt to fin with all day.

For fins I use these:

Following a Steve Parton recommendation. I like them, they work and my legs don't tire using them. I haven't tried other models so I can't comment. Just make sure you get some fin savers.

I like them a lot but as I say I have nothing to compare with. None of the others I tube with use them so they're not that popular probably because of the price. i've yet to hear anyone complain about their fins, they're normally having too much fun fishing.

Look up Water Skeeter amphibi fins, I asked my parents to try and find some Force Fins when they were in the US last year and they came back with these which are very very good for the money, you can also walk forwards in them when on land. I think they can be found in the UK for around £50, in the US they were around 55 dollars if I remember correctly.

Are there any fins suitable for use with bootfoot neoprenes? I have breathables as well but wear fins over my wading boots. As the water temp is dropping I will be moving towards using the neoprenes more frequently. They are unfortunately bootfoot.
