Default thinking of selling a 2 stroke, no idea of price

Hi,

I have a Johnson 5hp 2 stroke short shaft. Its in very good condition, starts quickly and very clean inside. Impeller seems to be in good nick with out taking it out for a visual inspection. While I have a good idea of prices for larger 2 strokes I have no clue about this. Any guess's on what they go for, not finding much info online for Johnsons, would you compare it equally to Honda or Yamaha ?

The Johnsons I have experience of have been made out the same mould as Evinrudes (both OMC), so you could try looking up Evinrudes of similar marque. I consider them better outboards than Yamahas. As for Hondas... any time I come across one I make sure there is a good pair of oars in the boat before going out .

For about the last 40 years, Johnson and Evinrude were the same outboards with different decals. As has been mentioned, their parent company was OMC (Outboard Marine Corporation) Every part is interchangeable, only the color was different.

How old is it? 5 HP was not a common one, they made them up through the 1960s and then there was a run of them in the 70s, I believe. In the 80s, they went to 4, 6, 7.5 (or 8), 9.9 and so on, there wasn't a 5 HP in the lineup for a long time.

If it's been taken care if, OMCs were great outboards and all my current outboards are Johnsons (albeit 1980s and 90s models). Currently, Johnson and Evinrude are owned by Bombadier of Canada and the Johnson brand has been mothballed. However, in new outboards the Evinrude E-Tec HPDI 2 stroke is the only one I'd even consider. Brilliant technology, 30% lighter than a comprable 4 stroke, and lower maintainance.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy and run older OMCs. Terrific reliability, simple, and rugged. Parts are widely available, even for very old models.

Grouse
Loch Leven have used 5 HP Evinrudes on their fleet of boats these past 20-odd years. Before that they had 6 HP Johnsons.

As Grouse says, they are identical. I have a 2 cylinder 4 HP Evinrude, and our club had a 4 HP 2 cyl Johnson. Mine is blue - the club's was white. That was all that separated them.

Hi stylie
Parts aren't made any more for Jo/Ev but most parts are fully interchangeable any engine size up to 8hp. Regulations have changed and only 4 stroke engines are sold new (emissions) unless you have a commercial use exemption. Some new parts are available from the States/Canada but minimum order and shipping charge is HIGH
The engines themselves are pretty bulletproof but the main issues arise round the water circulation and exhaust. Sand and exhaust gas can cut/ burn through from one skin to another...will run fine but then go bang because hot exhaust gas recirculates into the engine rather than exhausting after a period of fine running. Everything appears normal and tell tale works fine during this period saying 'nothing is wrong'. Wrong!
Plenty are sold on ebay from about £60+ as spares or repairs (depending on honesty may say running BUT....) right up to £250 for one that generates interest saying FSH, good runner etc... blah blah. Buyer beware Stored engines exhausts (integral to leg) rot whilst stood and you cant see it...same as the impeller
Next issue then is post and package...they don't fit well in an envelope so you need a 'local' buyer or be prepared to ship on a pallet for about £80...bearing in mind that someone buying it for spares this cost will be more than the engine.
Saying that I have one or two working for a living examples of and if you don't find a buyer give me a shout as the spares might come in handy one day soon.
Which starter mechanism is it?....is the throttle on the tiller arm or a slide control on hood?......does it have mixture control kn@b next to choke.
There is a site on the internet to check your engine number ...it's a coded word that gives you the year of manufacture.

Hi Jim

What's wrong with them?...or missing? I may be able to help

Anyway this should help you find out year of manufacture:

Johnson has changed how they indicate year in the model number several times. Depending on the year range your motor falls into, you will find your Johnson engine year information differently.

1980-Present
Engines since 1980 use a two letter code at the end of the model number based on the following key :
I = 1

N = 2

T 3

R 4

O 5

D 6

U 7

C 8

E 9

S = 0

For example the 'CE' at the end of 100STLCE indicate that the engine is from '89'.
If your are still unsure of your engine year, search for your model number on the Johnson 1980-later serial number year chart located here.

1969-1979
The actual year is found in the model number, not the serial number.
For example, 150TXL78 is a 150hp engine from 1978. 65ESLR72 would be from 1972.

Pre 1969
For engines prior to 1969 refer the the Johnson 1960-1979 serial number year chart located here.

If your unsure after reading the above you could post your serial numbers and I'll do it. the serial number is on the aluminium plate on the leg.

Other letters in model number indicate features....eg ES -elec start RP rope pull etc
J4 would be Johnson 4Hp J8 = Johnson 8 etc
