Default Rod length

Hi All

I dont have a float tube yet nor have I ever tried it but it is high on my to do list. I intend to thin out my rods and use the proceeds towards a tube.
Question is what rod length and weights do you all use when tubing.

Thanks
Kenny

I tend to fish wild waters for brown trout and my heavier outfit is a 9'3" Greys Missionary #5/6 with a #5 Snowbee XS floater and my lighter outfit is an 8'6" Sage Flight #4 with a #4 Snowbee Prestige floater. You don't need long rods in the tube, in fact they are a hindrance if you get a tip-wrap tangle. Also, because you are so low down even a short rod enables you to dibble a bob fly right back to the tube without spooking the fish.

Kenny that 9ft sage you bought from me all those years ago should do the trick. The fish will think you are a giant duck and let you get nice and close. Maybe you should also learn to swim!!

Hi Guys

Thanks for that, I was on the wrong track as I would have thought 10'.

Alberto, I still have that sage and it is still my favourite rod.
As for learning to swim that is also on my to do list at no 167, just above climbing Everest.

Quack, quack
Kenny

I use a 10' 4# Streamflex with a 5# line. Was recomemnded to get this by another 'tuber' and was so grateful for the tip. IMO this rod is perfect!
I have used it at Thornton and Elinor and it copes very well with hard fighting fish and casting a team of 3 flies.
HTH!

Hi there i use two rods one 9ft 5wt.with 6wt line on.10ft 5wt with 6wt line on.they load better with a 6.and the 10ft one is better for side casting in the wind imo.you dont need a big rod 9ft is ok and 5wt is fine.then before you go out on the water get a life jacketive got a spair tube if you fancy a day out just pm me a week before.thanks

Thanks for the further info. Looks like personal preference plays a big part so maybe I'll keep all my rods which vary from 9' #4 up to 10' #6 until ive tried it.

Phil, thanks for your very kind invitation, where do you fish? I'm kitted with waders and life jacket from my river fishing so all I need to do is get fit enough to do it.

Cheers
Kenny

I also forgot to mention, you don't need to cast miles and I would say that you'll probably be fishing with the wind at your back for most of the time.

Having said that, if it is windy, as soon as you stop paddling, your tube will turn you around to face the wind. Decent fins helps with the paddling.

If you get into fish, triangulate your position. Its amazing how much even a small fish will pull out of position!
