A place I like to go a couple of times a year (200 mile round-trip) is Llyn Bugeilyn in North/Mid Wales. For those to whom Welsh is a mystery it's pronounced Big-eye-lin.
It's a remote lake in the peaty uplands roughly halfway between Machynlleth and Llyn Clywedog and you need a 4x4 to get there as the road is appalling!
The fishing is controlled by the owners of Tal y Llyn fishery and tickets are obtained from the Tyn y Cornel Hotel which stands on the banks of Tal y Llyn. A day ticket was £11.00 last year and there are also 2 rowing boats at extra charge. You buy your ticket at the hotel then drive approx 12 miles to Bugeilyn.
It is a totally beautiful place and every year I am like a kid at Christmas as the trip draws near. About 3 weeks from now to be precise. it's not uncommon to be drifting around on the lake accompanied by Red Kites circling above.
The wild brownies take like rattlesnakes and I take my hat off to anyone who has a better hook-up rate than 50% - honestly! They like small, dark traditional wets and some lads I know do well on dry fly but the place just screams "wet fly" at you! We never kill any of the fish.
As a tubing water it's exceptional as more than half of the bank is unfishable due to peat bogs and steep hillsides. There is a smaller lake adjoining it with a dam at the far end and this, reputedly, holds bigger fish. In Bugeilyn any fish better than 3/4lb is a good 'un and there are the usual stories of rare 2 and 3lb fish being taken.
If anyone wants any more info just post on this thread or send me a PM.
