Smile Lough Arrow

I fished Lough Arrow yesterday and was on the water from noon till just after 5pm. A lovely day, very light breeze with high cloud. There was a 'trickling' of mayflies (a warm spring must have brought them on a little early) and an occasional trout was tempted. I'm pleased to know that fishing is about more than catching - because I didn't come close...but to hear a cuckoo and watch a heron added to a wonderful afternoon on one of the country's most beautiful loughs. I'm back in 10 days for another try.

Welcome drryfly, I spent a full day alone in a beautiful boat on Arrow a few years ago, weather wasn't unlike today, but it was backend.
The fishing was finished really, and I never saw a fish all day, but it is a spectacular place to not catch fish.
I hadn't gone to Ireland to go to Arrow, but I knew of it, and just happened to be passing, so we had a nights B&B locally, and the lady of the house gave me the use of the boat, I had stuck a rod in, just in case mind you.
I shall return one day, hopefully when the mayfly hatch is on, and bag a few of Arrows beauties.
S.

Arrow was the first lough I fished in Ireland some 44 years ago as a teenager. A wonderful man called Phil Healey who lived in Ballinafad took me and my friend under his wing, introduced us to the Murrough and the delights of tripping a big fly across the ripple as the light faded.........never to be forgotten. The lough still has a very special place in my affections.

I had been spared to see another spring, and I thank God for it.”
