Default advice on reinforcing a sheelin transom.

hi guys,
while taking home my boat recently i noticed the outboard is starting to pull the transom away from the back of the boat. this luckily enough is at the very early stages and i want to stop it from worsening.
my question is this, because of a small modification on the rear i cannot put a continuous reinforcing band around the back of the boat: would two "L" shaped brackets either side be enough to adequately reinforce the transom or are there pitfalls doing it this way ?

thank

I have seen boats reinforced at the transom using 2 "L" brackets like u mentioned. As long as the steel bracket was strong enough and bolted through both sides it should be ok.
How old is your boat and what size outboard do you have on it?
I think trailering a boat with a heavy outboard on puts a lot of stress on the transom, especially on bumpy roads.

agreed. i would take the engine off when travelling, engines are heavy and put too much stress on the boat when bouncing along back roads. you might need to get two long marine grade stainless steel angles made up to strengthen the transom, bolt them on.

I have Galvanised L Brackets to re-inforce my transom on both sides as I have a larger motor on the back... I think they are around 45 euro for the set.

I can give you details for sourcing them if you like.

thank guys, just needed reassuring that this would sort the problem out and there were no snags involved doing it this way.

hi BB & cax, the engine is a honda 10hp4stroke and like the boat they are probably both around 10yrs old (bought 2nd hand). i dont trailer the boat with the engine on, mainly as the trailer is a golden oldie too and rides too low to the ground, i was going to sell it + get one i could trailer with the engine but it does the job fine and my boat tends to stay put (better to be gentle with the antiques ) while we take a friends on any trips.

thank for the kind offer joey1 ,if its not too much trouble could you forward the details.

i think the transom got strained because when the lake levels were high recently, i pulled the boat well up (fully expecting a monsoon type winter) but the levels dropped back leaving the transom bearing the full weight of the engine.thankfully its not bad and im probably lucky to have the chance to reinforce it before it becomes terminal.

thank again guys.
