Assuming the boat is fibreglass and is stored out of the water rather than afloat - and assuming that no paint has been used previously (otherwise there could be a compatability issue )- (phew).....
1. Degrease the fibreglass, ie. wash down with soapy water and then rinse off with fresh water.
2. Sand the gel coat to remove the shine and provide a 'key' for succeeding coats of paint.
3. Apply a two pack epoxy undercoat (way mone waterproof than fibreglass !)
4. Staying within the maximum recoating interval for the epoxy - apply a finish coat of glossy two pack polyurethane.
5. Allow to fully cure - about 7 days at 20 Deg. C.
6. Go fishing !
You will have a paint job that is almost bullet proof, can be just washed down and wiped and when the time comes to re-coat (after some years !) it is just a question of rubbing down the polyurethane to provide a 'key' and then re-coating with fresh polyurethane.
Note: In the surface preparation and application phase you will have to reposition the boat on the trailer or stocks in order that you treat the areas normally in contact with the supports.
