Keep in mind that the Gallons Per Hour (GPH) rating tends to be optimisitc and depends on the amount of lift, length, and routing of the outlet hose.
For small boats where the main use is to clear water that accumulates from rain or backing into the occasional wave and taking in a little water, I've done just fine with 500-700 GPH pumps.
Also, make sure you use the proper wire size to connect the pump. Pumps are relatively high-drain, so you have to use bigger wire than you would for just running lights and other low drain stuff.
Also not sure if it gets cold where you are, but if there's water in the bilge it must not freeze or it will break the pump. Make sure the bilge is dry and stays dry after haul-out for the winter.
