Default Fishing on Lough Melvin

Hi
Im a regular fly fisherman on lough melvin and Ive promised to bring my dad out for a days fishing in the boat before the end of the season, my problem now is that he has never fly fished ever before so my options are

1) single fly with 10ft cast and let him learn and possibly get one on the dangle or

2) spinning rod from a drifting boat where he also runs in the chance of a salmon?

what ya think? and if spinning is the best bet what spinners should he use?

Melvin probably wouldn't be the best place to take a beginner fly fishing...with the conditions at this time of the year being a little tempermental and the trout not being that easy to catch at the best of times!

Rather than the 2hr trip to Melvin I suggest that you get your dad up to the likes of Moorbrook to develop his casting skills and catch a couple of stockies...then when he has grasped the technique take him the the wild western loughs of Ireland

Or

Take him to Melvin and teach him how to row a boat in a big wave so YOU can nurse the Garrsion shore for a big Roo or silver boy (probably more red than silver now though!)

Tight lines anyway

Thanks for responce chunky

Fully agree with what your saying, but Im heading down anyway to bring the boat back home tomo, so its more a case of he wants to get out in a boat for a sail around a lough ,for a bit of fun, and I know he would be bored within a few hrs if he wasnt doing something.

like your idea of the oars though!

You could set him up with a slowly rowed boat and flies cast out sideways Northampton style. The fish wll take on the swing with a good chance of successful hookups whether strike, no strike or strike with wrong timing.

As IFT says why not spend some time with your dad trolling on Mask, with a team of three flies.

Leave the gilarro alone. Tye up imitations of perch fry or use sedges in the evening.
