I don't know about Scotland, but here in the frozen tundra of the north central US, our best fishing is in the winter months.

Now, I'm saying it's the best fishing. NOT the most comfortable or easiest. Cripes, last winter after a big snowstorm in March, a buddy and I trudged through better than knee deep snow for over a mile to get to a good section of the river. Who the hell needs a gym? 20 minutes of that is the workout equivilent of about 3 days on the stairmaster. Then there's the standing in 3 degree water for hours on end. . .

The payoff is that the fish are concentrated and they are not nearly as skittish as they are in the warmer months with the low water.
